Bas-Jan Walhof
"I want to contribute to the collaboration between government, education and entrepreneurs to take Twente even further. Only by joining forces can we build a region that is attractive to live, work and do business in."
From Hong Kong to India, from German investment banks to his own company – the world was at his feet. Yet Bas-Jan Walhof made a deliberate choice for Twente. As director of Aqua+, a 130-year-old family business now under the leadership of the fifth generation, he understands the importance of being deeply rooted in the region. Within Twente Board, he represents the business community and advocates for collaboration as the driving force behind progress.
Connection as Strength
After his international experiences, Bas-Jan felt a strong bond with Twente. “Twente offers so many opportunities. The region has a unique mentality and a strong entrepreneurial spirit.” Within this context, he sees collaboration as the key to progress. “Whether it concerns attracting and retaining talent, strengthening the labour market, or supporting technical and construction-related sectors – only together can we move forward.” This belief aligns seamlessly with Twente Board’s mission: bringing together government, education, and business to shape the region’s future. “We cannot keep Twente attractive on our own. The entire region must contribute.”
Practical Thinking, Broad Perspective
The themes addressed by Twente Board resonate with him personally. “Healthcare, technology, labour market – everything is interconnected. As a technical company, we too face challenges in finding enough skilled professionals. That requires both new talent and opportunities for career changers. Fortunately, there are already initiatives making a difference, such as ‘Statushouders aan het werk’ – a business-driven approach supported by the Culture Kitchen Foundation and Twente Board.”
Bas-Jan views Twente’s position in broader developments with realism. “Twente is not always the first to adopt new trends. But that does not have to be a disadvantage. It would help if we more often approached developments – even those beyond our region – with an open mind.”
He combines this broader outlook with Twente’s values. “If we dare to innovate while continuing to care for each other, we can go far. That’s when Twente shows its best side. It requires cooperation, but also courage – the courage to take responsibility and be visible.”
Bruto Twents Geluk as a Compass
For Bas-Jan, regional development means more than just economic growth. “The sense of ‘noaberschap’ – community spirit – is deeply rooted in Twente. It leads to strong communities where people care for one another. This is also evident in the business sector.”
To him, Bruto Twents Geluk represents a region where people feel safe and content – a good place to live, work and enjoy life. “We must ensure everyone has equal opportunities. If we get that right across the board, we are building a stable region where people want to stay – and return to.”
