Chair of the Executive Board of the University of Twente

Vinod Subramaniam

“In Twente, we have everything we need: the entire education and research chain—ROC, Saxion University of Applied Sciences, and the University of Twente. But what truly makes Twente special is the willingness to work together. There is an intrinsic motivation in this region to roll up our sleeves for one another: the spirit of noaberschap. And when you combine all those strengths, truly remarkable things happen in the region!"

As a board member, Vinod Subramaniam represents the education sector. He places great value on collaboration with other parties. “I find it incredibly rewarding to get to know all the players in the region. Many issues benefit from a broad approach. It’s beneficial to work together within the education chain, but also with municipalities, the province, and the business community.”

Pride
Vinod hopes that Twente will increasingly dare to express pride and make its presence known in Europe. “Then we can truly make our mark. We are a modest people, but fantastic things are happening here. We should feel a bit more proud of that. Let’s celebrate it together. With the right attitude and strength, we can make Twente a resounding success!”

Challenges
According to Vinod, the greatest challenge lies in the climate and the upcoming transition. “We need to view waste more and more as a resource for new products. Circularity can be applied in so many different ways—consider textile reuse and even our food. Ultimately, everything should be sustainable. Another issue close to my heart is housing—not only for students but also for our staff and other residents. We have a wonderful region and a fantastic place to live. We have space here, and we want to grow. We have a collective housing challenge.”

Gross Twente Happiness
At the University of Twente, employee and student well-being is a key priority. “It’s about recognition and appreciation, about the human touch. It’s the balance between work, living, and life. That balance is crucial. The concept of Gross Twente Happiness provides an excellent starting point for meaningful discussions.”
