Development of creative and technical talent

Leonardo

Society has a great need for highly skilled technical employees. With the Leonardo project, we are working to train and attract technical talent to the region.

Leonardo Programme
The University of Twente (UT) and Vrije Universiteit (VU) in Amsterdam are working together to train the technical talent urgently needed for the future, having launched the joint bachelor’s programme UT-VU Mechanical Engineering. This collaboration enables more students to pursue a technical education.

A Collaboration to Educate More Technical Students
Across the Netherlands, the demand for highly educated technical professionals is significant. The collaboration between the University of Twente (UT) and Vrije Universiteit (VU) has provided a technical university programme in the northern Randstad since 2019, allowing more students to follow a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. With the programme now underway for several years, we’re seeing steady growth in student numbers, and students rate the programme highly. After completing the bachelor’s degree, students can pursue a technical master’s degree in Twente.

Mechanical Engineering
In the Mechanical Engineering programme, students work on high-tech solutions for the future, developing as experts in designing, creating, improving, and maintaining machines, structures, and processes. The master’s specialisations are key to addressing technological themes and advancements, including clean energy, healthcare, smart production, and product innovations.

Connections with the Regional Business Sector
As part of the curriculum, students are introduced to Twente’s business sector, both from the programme in Amsterdam and in Twente. This exchange provides valuable learning experiences and professional networking. Companies operate in a job market where there is a great demand for technical talent. Students gain insights into technical companies in the region, translating their studies into practice and exploring career prospects as mechanical engineers. Guest lectures, company visits, internships, and graduation projects are organised in collaboration with companies as part of the technical courses. To date, around 100 Twente-based technical companies have been involved across a wide range of topics.
