Promoting technological talent in Twente

Technology Enrollment

Technology is everywhere and has become indispensable in society. It plays a role in healthcare, construction, logistics, and the food industry, and is essential for achieving our sustainability goals. The demand for technically skilled people, both practically and theoretically trained, will continue to increase in the coming years, including in Twente. However, there is a significant shortage of technicians. This is why Twente is collaborating to increase enrolment in technical education at all levels. This initiative is part of the Instroom Technologie programme.

Technology Enrollment
“A lot is already being done in Twente to inspire and train more technical talent,” says Marieke Rinket, director of the Instroom Technologie programme. “Within Strong Technical Education (STO), for example, 21 VMBO schools work together to improve the quality and quantity of technical education. But there’s more we can do.”

Identifying Gaps
Technology Enrollment focuses on identifying gaps and new opportunities. “We’ve noticed that primary and secondary education have been under-emphasised so far. That’s why we want to target these areas by supporting existing initiatives and encouraging the development of promising new projects. Our approach spans the entire educational chain—from primary and secondary education through to study selection—with the ultimate goal of increasing enrolment in technical careers in Twente.”

Informed Choices
“Unfamiliarity breeds indifference,” Marieke explains, noting the importance of early exposure to technology. “Technology is often seen as difficult or ‘dirty,’ but that’s outdated. Technology is interesting, fun, and very necessary. Children begin ruling out study options in the last years of primary school, so we want to introduce them to technology early, allowing them to make informed choices. This exposure doesn’t have to be limited to school; it can also involve company visits, where students can see and experience industry equipment that schools often don’t have. In this way, they can see what’s possible with technology. Everyone should ultimately choose what brings them joy, but I’m convinced that the pool of interest is much larger than we’re currently accessing. Let’s reframe it: familiarity makes it more likely to attract interest.”

Collaboration
Companies play an important role in Instroom Technologie, but Marieke emphasises the need for involvement from the whole community, including governments, education, and entrepreneurs. “In municipal libraries, for example, children can experiment with technology (in Tetem’s Maker Spaces), and VMBO schools hold workshops in Technolabs for primary school students. Every party is a key link. Teachers also have an important role to play. It would be fantastic if Twente could develop a network that facilitates knowledge sharing, making technology accessible and easy to approach for every school.”

Project Proposals
As programme director, Marieke collaborates with involved parties to further develop Technology Enrollment. Within this programme, new projects are undertaken to increase enrolment in technical studies. “We’re eager to speak with people who have good ideas and to build connections with existing initiatives to explore potential for scaling up.”

Gross Twente Happiness

In terms of Gross Twente Happiness, this programme contributes to the following pillars:

Income
“Increasingly, technical roles offer better earning potential, especially for skilled workers.”

Job Security
“With a shortage of workers, there is always demand in the technical sector.”

Personal Development
“Companies are eager to make use of talent and are open to providing opportunities for further development. Teachers also have more opportunities to grow.”

Social Engagement
“Students want to do something useful and meaningful for the world. Technology and its applications can make a positive difference, particularly in areas like sustainability, healthcare, and the energy transition.”

Subjective Well-being
“By introducing children to technology early, they can make well-informed choices. Following your heart and choosing what makes you happy contributes to subjective well-being.”

Environment
“Technology is needed to lessen the strain on nature and protect it. Technology has more applications than we realise—for example, it plays a role in clothing recycling.”
