A regional ICT infrastructure for breakthrough innovations in healthcare

ZorgDataPunt

The pressure on the healthcare system in Twente is increasing

The pressure on the healthcare system in Twente is increasing due to an aging population, staff shortages, and the rise in chronic conditions. Digital healthcare innovations can help organize care closer to home, strengthen prevention, and give residents more control over their own care. But developing and testing these innovations requires secure, standardized access to healthcare data. This is precisely where ZorgDataPunt is making a difference.

ZorgDataPunt (Healthcare Data Hub) is developing an open and scalable IT infrastructure for the secondary use of healthcare data: not for treatment, but for research, education, innovation, and practical testing environments. This creates a regional testing ground where companies, healthcare organizations, researchers, and educational institutions can collaborate more quickly and securely on data-driven healthcare innovation.

The possibilities offered by ZorgDataPunt

  • Accelerating the development and validation of digital applications such as sensors, algorithms and e-health solutions.

  • A robust legal, privacy and governance framework to ensure the secure handling of healthcare data.

  • Regional collaboration between healthcare organisations, knowledge partners, businesses and residents.

Use of three specific use cases to test the infrastructure directly in practice:
- post-operative recovery in older people
- heart failure monitoring and smart decision support
- education and training of healthcare professionals

Why this is important

ZorgDataPunt contributes to a future-proof healthcare system, in which appropriate care is provided more often at home, preventatively and digitally. The infrastructure makes optimal use of the strong innovative capacity of Twente and Salland, and strengthens the region’s position as a model region for data-driven healthcare innovation.

Expected impact

  • Faster development of solutions that improve health and promote self-reliance. Better utilisation of the region’s innovation and research capacity.
  • Sustainable embedding of healthcare innovation thanks to a robust infrastructure and business case.
  • A boost to social impact and to retaining talent and specialist care in the region.

The direction for the further development of ZorgDataPunt

During the follow-up to the interactive Cross-WP Workshop, the direction for the further development of ZorgDataPunt was established. A number of guiding principles were identified for the next phase:

  • A ‘federated-first’ approach as the starting point.
  • Sustainable, forward-looking governance.
  • Working on the basis of concrete use cases.
  • Scope to gradually move towards greater collaboration.
  • Exploring alignment with ‘Versneld Verbinden’.

In addition, ZorgDataPunt supports not only collaboration between parties but also technical data exchange. By utilising existing data standards, organisations can work more efficiently and avoid duplication of effort in areas such as data extraction and coding.

Updates

Within ZorgDataPunt, work is underway on various use cases that demonstrate how secure data exchange and data-driven care are put into practice. Updates on the progress, results and lessons learnt from these projects are regularly shared on this page.

First ZorgDataPunt pilot successfully completed: use case for elderly patients post-surgery
As part of the use case for elderly patients post-surgery, work is underway on a secure data infrastructure and AI applications for monitoring vulnerable elderly patients during their recovery following surgery. The first version of the ZorgDataPunt platform for secondary data use has now been tested by ZGT’s Centre for Geriatric Traumatology (CvGT). The pilot provided valuable insights for the further development of the platform, including improvements to data display, data links and export options.

Use case education
Within the education use case, work is underway to create a learning environment in which students and healthcare professionals learn to work with healthcare data. The University of Twente and Saxion are linking ZorgDataPunt to digital learning environments, so that students can analyse datasets and develop and evaluate eHealth applications. In this way, ZorgDataPunt contributes to the training of healthcare professionals who can apply data-driven care in practice.

Use case heart failure
As part of the heart failure use case, Medisch Spectrum Twente, Deventer Hospital and Luscii are working to improve home monitoring for heart failure. The foundations have been laid for using data in a reliable, unambiguous and legally sound manner. The next step is to develop models that help identify potential deterioration at an earlier stage, with the aim of better supporting healthcare professionals and helping to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions.
